Full Metal Alchemist Movie: The Conqueror of Shambala

The Full Metal Alchemist movie takes place two years after the end of the TV series. I suggest that if you haven't seen the entire TV series, please stop reading now and go and finish the series. Now, you have Ed who's in Germany in 1923 with a different Alphonse shooting off a rocket which gets supported by the Thule Society who wants to use the technology for their conquest of Shambala which ends up to be Ed's real world. Meanwhile on the other world, Al is traveling around the world trying to find a way to bring Ed back home.

That's the basic plot of the movie. Most of the characters make an appearance in the movie with the dead characters showing up in Ed's world and actually has a purpose to the story. Sometimes you have characters showing up just because they can but not with this movie (maybe except for Sheska). Ed's world mirrors the politicial conditions of Germany at that time along with certain historicial events like Hitler's Beer Hall Push but it injects alchemy, rocket technology, and even nuclear weapons into the mix. Then you have the main world where the surviving characters have either moved on or still stuck in the past because of Ed's disappearance. Somehow, I didn't like the way Ed's world got more attention while the main world was just secondary and didn't get develop as much. The character development on Ed and Al was great but the main villian wasn't really a great villian even though there was a purpose to her motativiations. The animation is great along with the music even though I didn't like the opening song that much. I enjoyed the movie as it had a decent plot along with some good battle scenes and had a great ending except it did leave for an OVA come out to finish the final loose end.

It was great to see the FMA cast in animated form once again even though I want to see the manga storyline animated which would require to do the entire series. Anyway, it's a good movie if you're an FMA fan but since it requires for the person to watch the entire TV series to understand the movie, it's not something to gain new fans of the series. I'll give the FMA movie a 4 out of 5.
