xxxHolic Movie - A Midsummer Night's Dream

The xxxHolic series goes side by side with Tsubasa Chronicles which it involves Yuuko the Dimension Witch and her servant, Watanuki who has the ability to see ghosts and other spirits. He became Yuuko's servant because he wants to get rid of his ability since the ghosts are driving him crazy and once he gets rid of the ability, they won't bother him anymore. Besides doing the basic cleaning and cooking duties, he also does duties for her clients who usually have some magical or spirital thing about them. To help him with those duties, Yuuko usually has Watanuki's number one annoyance and classmate, Domeki to go with him since he has the ability to eliminate spirits but he can't see them though. Watanuki has a love interest named Himawari who would do anything for but she doesn't really pick up on his interests of her. That's the basic setup of the xxxHolic world that the movie kinda gives but throws it at random points. As for the movie plot, Yuuko receives a request from a woman to help her open the door to her mansion that for some reason, she can't get inside even though she has the key to it. So Yuuko, Watanuki, and Domeki go to the mansion and managed to get inside. What they discovered is that a bunch of collectors of different objects are gathered here under the invitation of the owner. Will Yuuko, Watanuki, and Domeki be able to figure out the mystery behind the mansion before they become part of a collection themselves?

The movie did justice with the style of xxxHolic which is usually a self-contained story with Watanuki doing something for a client along with the assistance of Domeki. I was surprised with Yuuko in the movie since she doesn't usually take an active role with helping out her clients. She usually gives some cyptic advice to Watanuki which he has to figure out before something very bad happens to him. The voices of the characters fit very well with their personalities which I imagine correctly that would be while reading the manga. The animation is just simply beautiful with a combination of great CG effects. The music was very good at fitting the mood but I didn't really mind the ED theme at all but oh well. There's even an appearance of Syaroan and Sakura towards the end of the movie which is related to the Tsubasa movie that was shown in theaters with conjuction with the xxxHolic movie. So the connection between is strong when they have their own movies. Also, I did some research with the title of the movie and comparing it to the Shakespeare play of the same name. From what I could find, it seems that the only comparsion between the two is that they are both related to the seperation of reality and the imagination. There's probably more similarities between the two but I can't find them and not really doing an essay about it.

Overall, I found the xxxHolic movie to be enjoyable especially that I have read six volumes of the manga. For people who don't know or have little understanding of the universe, the background is a little sparse but it's a good medium-hearted comedy/supernatural movie to watch. It does get weird and random at times but it doesn't really drive you insane though. This movie is a good preview of what the TV series will be like and if the TV series can be like the movie, I can think of only good things about it then. I'll give xxxHolic the Movie a 4 out of 5.
